AN OVERVIEW OF APPROACHES AND METHODOLOGICAL DILEMMAS

Abstract

In contemporary social contexts, there is an increasing need for research approaches that integrate theoretical knowledge with practical interventions. Action research, as a participatory and reflective research model, represents a methodological framework that
links scientific inquiry and practical action. Its primary objective is not only to examine social phenomena but also to transform existing practices through the active engagement of stakeholders in the processes of research and change. Consequently, action research transcends traditional research paradigms and establishes itself as an instrument of social innovation and community empowerment. This approach is particularly significant in the context of complex social transformations, as it fosters the development of flexible and
inclusive models of intervention based on participants’ needs. This paper aims to examine action research from a sociological perspective by exploring its defining characteristics, methodological specificities, practical applications, and inherent strengths and limitations. The paper also critically addresses issues of participation, power dynamics, validity, and the transformative potential of action research in contemporary social contexts.
